Check EUIPO eSearch too — EU trademarks are valid in Germany.
Mark type, Nice Classification, file in German or English. Base €290 covers 3 classes.
Plan class strategy to maximize coverage within base fee.
Electronic filing system. Paper costs €10 more.
System is in German — use browser translation if needed.
DPMA checks formalities and absolute grounds under MarkenG §8.
Strict on descriptive marks in both German and English.
Respond with distinctiveness arguments. Accelerated exam available for €200.
Evidence of acquired distinctiveness (Verkehrsdurchsetzung) can overcome objections.
Registered and published. No pre-registration opposition in Germany.
3-month opposition window from publication date.
3 months from publication for third parties to oppose.
Germany registers first, then allows opposition.
